Bumper Car Floor Requirements: Battery, Ground-Grid, Overhead, and UFO Systems
Last updated: July 29, 2026
Quick Answer
Battery-powered and inflatable UFO bumper cars need a flat, hardened and durable operating surface, but the floor does not supply electricity. Floor pick-up, or ground-grid, bumper cars require a dedicated conductive floor connected to the control system. Ceiling pick-up bumper cars receive power through an overhead grid and the floor, so both the operating surface and supporting structure must be planned as part of the arena.
Before ordering, provide the clear usable arena dimensions, current floor material, level differences, drainage, indoor or outdoor condition, available power, clear height and planned number of cars. A general room size is not enough for a reliable layout.
See the Nova Rides bumper car series for the available car types.
Floor Requirements by Bumper Car Type
| Bumper car type | Does the floor form part of the power system? | Basic surface requirement | Additional site preparation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery-powered bumper car | No | Flat, hardened, smooth and durable | Boundary, charging, storage and weather plan |
| Inflatable UFO bumper car | No | Flat surface with enough rotation and circulation space | Boundary, charging and storage |
| Floor pick-up / ground-grid | Yes | Dedicated compatible conductive floor | Control cabinet, power connection, boundary and rain protection when outdoors |
| Ceiling pick-up / overhead | Yes, together with the ceiling grid | Flat, durable operating floor | Ceiling grid, supporting structure, control system and suitable clear height |
1. Measure the Clear Usable Arena
Measure the space where the cars can actually move. Do not use the total room dimensions if columns, doors, ticket counters, operator stations, storage areas or safety routes occupy part of the room.
Send the supplier:
- Clear internal length, width and height
- Column, beam and fixed-obstacle positions
- Entrance and exit locations
- Operator and control-cabinet locations
- Charging and storage areas
- Floor joints, slopes, drains and level differences
- Current floor photos and a simple plan drawing
The desired number of cars must be checked against this usable area. Car quantity affects movement space, rider flow and operator visibility.

2. Floors for Battery-Powered Bumper Cars
Battery cars can be moved between different venues because they do not need a conductive floor. They can operate on suitable hardened surfaces in malls, indoor FECs, outdoor plazas, parking areas and amusement parks.
A suitable floor should be:
- Flat and reasonably level
- Hardened and strong enough for repeated car movement
- Smooth enough for predictable steering
- Free from large gaps, loose materials and sharp transitions
- Easy to clean and inspect
- Protected from standing water
The current Nova Rides parameter table lists a two-seat battery-car example weighing approximately 160 kg, with a listed load capacity of 150 kg. The floor therefore needs to support the equipment, riders and repeated movement, not only pedestrian traffic.
Outdoor projects also need a plan for rain, drainage, charging and overnight storage. Battery power removes the need for a fixed electrical floor, but it does not remove the need for a controlled operating environment.

3. Floors for Inflatable UFO Bumper Cars
UFO cars also use batteries, so the floor does not supply power. Their circular bodies and joystick-controlled rotation make the layout different from conventional car-shaped bumper cars.
Nova Rides currently lists body diameters of approximately:
- Kids UFO: Ø1.35 m
- Adult UFO: Ø1.83 m
- Family UFO: Ø2.1 m
Do not calculate the arena from the car diameter alone. Allow additional space for rotation, collision, circulation, entrance control and operator visibility.
The surface should be flat and free from objects that could damage the PVC inflatable ring. A carpeted, loose or badly jointed surface should not be accepted without a model-specific review.
4. Ground-Grid Bumper Car Floors
A floor pick-up or ground-grid arena uses the floor as part of the electrical system. The cars, floor panels, wiring, control cabinet, boundary and site power must be planned together.
Nova Rides’ current product parameter table lists two floor formats:
| Floor format | Current listed panel size | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard floor panel | 1.5 × 0.48 m | Requires more on-site assembly and connection work |
| Modular floor panel | 2 × 1.06 m | Approximately 2.12 m² per panel; more components are combined before shipment |
The modular panel size has been confirmed as 2 × 1.06 m. The number of panels depends on the arena dimensions and final layout.
Before confirming a ground-grid floor, check:
- Base-floor flatness and structural condition
- Moisture, drainage and rain protection
- Final arena shape and edge treatment
- Power-supply and control-cabinet locations
- Cable routes and protected connections
- Boundary, entrance and operator position
- Construction sequence with local contractors
The floor panels must be placed and connected in the correct sequence. Welded or connected areas must remain smooth so that the cars do not experience unnecessary wheel wear or unstable movement.
For outdoor projects, provide a reliable canopy or other rain-protection structure. A ground-grid arena should not be planned as an uncovered installation exposed to rain.
5. Floors for Ceiling Pick-Up Bumper Cars
Ceiling pick-up cars use an overhead grid and vehicle antenna, while the floor provides the other electrical pole. The system is also called overhead, ceiling-grid or Skynet.
The current Nova Rides ceiling pick-up example uses DC 90 V motor voltage and a 2 m antenna. However, the final distance between the grid and floor must be confirmed from the selected car, supporting frame and actual building.
Provide:
- Clear internal height
- Roof, canopy and beam structure
- Lighting, ventilation and other overhead equipment
- Proposed support-frame positions
- Floor construction and condition
- Access method for inspection and maintenance
The operating floor must still be flat and durable. An overhead system does not compensate for an uneven surface.
6. Boundary, Access, Charging, and Operator Position
Floor planning should include the complete operating workflow, not only the driving area.
Plan:
- A controlled rider entrance and exit
- A visible operator position
- Queue space outside the active arena
- A boundary compatible with the selected system
- Protected electrical and control equipment
- Access for moving cars in and out
- A maintenance route that does not cross the rider queue
- A separate charging and storage area for battery cars
Charging should not take place inside an active rider area. Control cabinets and electrical connections should be accessible to authorized staff but protected from riders.

FAQ
Can battery bumper cars run on a normal concrete floor?
They can operate on a suitable flat, hardened concrete surface, but photos and dimensions should be reviewed before confirmation. The floor should be smooth, durable, free from harmful joints and protected from standing water.
What is the current Nova Rides modular floor size?
The current modular floor panel is 2 × 1.06 m, equal to approximately 2.12 m² per panel. The required quantity depends on the final arena dimensions and layout.
Does a ground-grid bumper car require a special floor?
Yes. The floor supplies power to the cars and must be matched with the control cabinet and wiring. This type of flooring features a unique design: insulating panels systematically divide the arena into positive and negative zones, directly supplying power to the vehicles. Compared to ceiling-grid bumper cars, this system eliminates the need for an overhead power grid, thereby simplifying both installation and maintenance.
Does an Skynet bumper car need a special floor?
Yes, the floor still forms part of the electrical system together with the ceiling grid. The floor and ceiling serve as the positive and negative terminals of the power grid, respectively, supplying power to the vehicle via connecting wires. It must also be level and durable. The project additionally needs an overhead grid, supporting structure and suitable clear height.
How large should a bumper car arena be?
There is no single universal size. It depends on car dimensions, number of cars, rider group, entrance arrangement, boundary and operator visibility. If you do not have a clear idea of the site dimensions, you can base your calculations on an allowance of approximately 20 square meters per vehicle.
Can a ground-grid arena be installed outdoors?
It can be considered for a properly designed covered venue, but it needs reliable rain protection, drainage and electrical planning. It should not be installed as an unprotected open-air floor.
